FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - OPERATION: FAIR GAME STOP PROTEST MAY 10TH 2008

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

"OPERATION: FAIR GAME STOP" PROTEST MAY 10TH 2008 Worldwide Protest Against the Scientology Fair Game Policy

Winnipeg, – April 29, 2008 – A peaceful protest against the abusive policies of Scientology will begin on May 10, 2008, at 11am at the corner of Gary St. and Portage Ave.

This is the forth protest in as many months being promoted by a loose conglomeration of grassroots activists under the heading of "Anonymous". This international movement includes ex-Scientologists, longtime cult researchers, and concerned citizens from all walks of life.

May 10 will focus specifically on Scientology's "Fair Game Law", which states that persons or agencies Scientology considers to be enemies may be: "deprived of property or injured by any means by any Scientologist without any discipline of the Scientologist. May be tricked, sued or lied to or destroyed." Although Scientologists claim the Fair Game Law was cancelled in 1968, the text of the cancellation makes it clear that only the usage of the term "Fair Game" was canceled. Indeed, there are many examples demonstrating that the practice of Fair Game continues. During this event we shall distribute informative fliers and promoting educational websites. We are also happy to answer questions from the media and public.

For more reading, an information package about Scientology and Anonymous has been created and is available for free download at: RapidShare: 1-Click Webhosting

Facial covering is recommended for anyone who wishes to protest. Scientology maintains a policy of attacking critics by any means possible, legal or otherwise, and many protesters report being followed, harassed, and intimidated following the previous protests.

  1. # #

Saturday, June 14th, 1030 hours (10:30 AM) CST

BE AT THE MEETING SPOT FOR 10:30 AM (1130 hours). (Indicated above) Upon arriving there we will all debrief each other on what should be said when a pedestrian asks "What is Scientology?", or "Why are you protesting?". Shortly after, we shall travel on foot from the meeting spot, to the Church of Scientology to begin our protest.

  • KEEP IT PEACEFUL! Anyone who is not peaceful will be removed from the protest by police.
  • Bring signs and flyers to the event! Signs must NOT promote hatred.
  • Video cameras are a great idea as well.
  • Remember, conceal your personal identity as best as possible. Even before arriving at the meeting area, Cover your face with scarves, touques, ski masks, sunglasses or any other sort of disguise. It is completely legal when outdoors in Canada, especially with our weather. However, masks are not permitted inside many public buildings (e.g. Polo Park mall). Remove them if prompted by police or mall security, otherwise, leave the building.
  • It is generally unwise to park your vehicle near the protest area if you want to remain anonymous when you leave. If possible, park a safe distance from the protest area and bus/walk the remainder of the distance.

Attendees

Please add yourself to the list:

  • Confirmed: 7
  • Possible: 0

Identification

If prompted by a member of Scientology for identification, do not give any ID. If prompted by a police officer, comply with them. But be sure it's a police officer, and not just a security guard.

IMPORTANT: DO NOT, at any time, remove your mask when you are around your fellow Anons. Rumor has it the CoS is having people infiltrate the protest groups in order to identify them. After leaving the protest, leave only with your well known friends, and only reveal your face once you are sure you are not being followed.

Police, City Hall, and Copwatch

If anyone wishes to attempt to get in touch with any of these, please feel free to do so. Don't forget the police are on our side for this so remember to stay professional and treat them with the utmost respect.

Signs, flyers, and you.

Know what you are handing out, and only make copies of what you feel would make the best reading material for passers-by. They're most definitely not going to read All That Shit, By: You.

Keep it short and sweet, and informative!

Feel free to add to the list:

  • Pamphlet 1Excellent pamphlet for those going masked.

Big standup sign with lots of info

Video/Photography

If anyone is up to the task, and has the equipment, feel free to bring it. DO NOT harass people who do not wish to be videotaped.

DO expect the CoS to have people videotaping you. Keep your face covered and ignore them.

  • Video camera count = 2
  • Still photography count = 1
  • Megaphones = 0

THE LAW

Keep it peaceful! You are within Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms rights to freedom of speech and freedom of assembly to peacefully protest and voice your opinion about any issue. The police and the law are on our side. If they follow you, they are breaking the law. Finally the nanny state is paying off.

Remember what it is we are trying to accomplish. We are not protesting against the followers of scientology; we are protesting against the activities of an organization that exploits the weak. If we give out the facts about the crimes Scientology has comitted, public opinion will certainly be sympathetic to us. Don't bring "Honk if you hate Scientology" signs - this is not about hate or aggression.

More on the legality of the protest:

You are required by law to tell an officer your name, if you give a false name and don't have any ID on you, then they can and will take you to the station until you can be identified.

I called 51 Division with some questions and was helped by a very friendly officer who told me that:

1) Handing out flyers is illegal due to some bylaw, but, according to this officer, "No one enforces that law". He told me that the only reason why an officer will ask you to stop handing flyers out is if you're harassing people with them. The example he gave was blocking their path and forcing them to take the flyer. He said "Standing on the sidewalk and holding your hand out for people to take your flyer if they want has never been an issue".
2) Wearing masks is totally O.K too. He said, "I've been to 100s of protests and if it's cold and you're wearing a ski mask that's alright, or if you're wearing a halloween mask or something like that, that's fine too". He said that the only way wearing a mask can get you in trouble is if you commit an offence while wearing it (i.e, vandalism, assault, etc.)

He wished us all good luck, and told us to have fun and stay safe.

The police have been informed and are supportive of us exercising our rights. The Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms guarantees our rights to do what we are planning to do. The law is on our side. The police are on our side. The facts are on our side. If you're some kind of crazy cowboy looking to fight the establishment by breaking the law, you have 364 other days to do it. Don't mess it up for the rest of us.

For the love of all things sacred, remember this: The protest you are attending is legal. We need not fear the law.

Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms

2. Everyone has the following fundamental freedoms:

a) freedom of conscience and religion;
b) freedom of thought, belief, opinion and expression, including freedom of the press and other media of communication;
c) freedom of peaceful assembly; and
d) freedom of association.

Important Notice from Criminal Code about Unlawful Assembly

63. (1) An unlawful assembly is an assembly of three or more persons who, with intent to carry out any common purpose, assemble in such a manner or so conduct themselves when they are assembled as to cause persons in the neighbourhood of the assembly to fear, on reasonable grounds, that they

(a) will disturb the peace tumultuously; or
(b) will by that assembly needlessly and without reasonable cause provoke other persons to disturb the peace tumultuously.

Lawful assembly becoming unlawful (2) Persons who are lawfully assembled may become an unlawful assembly if they conduct themselves with a common purpose in a manner that would have made the assembly unlawful if they had assembled in that manner for that purpose.

66. Every one who is a member of an unlawful assembly is guilty of an offence punishable on summary conviction.

Regarding signs and flyers

Signs MUST NOT state hate towards Scientology or its followers. We are here for a peaceful protest, not to spread hate. Remember, we want to keep this LEGAL. Spreading hate is a HATE CRIME. More on that:

Public incitement of hatred

319. (1) Every one who, by communicating statements in any public place, incites hatred against any identifiable group where such incitement is likely to lead to a breach of the peace is guilty of

(a) an indictable offence and is liable to imprisonment for a term not exceeding two years; or
(b) an offence punishable on summary conviction.

Wilful promotion of hatred (2) Every one who, by communicating statements, other than in private conversation, wilfully promotes hatred against any identifiable group is guilty of

(a) an indictable offence and is liable to imprisonment for a term not exceeding two years; or
(b) an offence punishable on summary conviction.

Defences (3) No person shall be convicted of an offence under subsection (2)

(a) if he establishes that the statements communicated were true;
(b) if, in good faith, the person expressed or attempted to establish by an argument an opinion on a religious subject or an opinion based on a belief in a religious text;
(c) if the statements were relevant to any subject of public interest, the discussion of which was for the public benefit, and if on reasonable grounds he believed them to be true; or
(d) if, in good faith, he intended to point out, for the purpose of removal, matters producing or tending to produce feelings of hatred toward an identifiable group in Canada.

Regarding Video and Photography

IMPORTANT INFO FOR PHOTOGRAPHERS/CAMERAMEN! YOU MUST READ THIS LINK BEFORE DOING ANYTHING!

  • This link is specific to Canadian rights and laws. The first is extremely good however, and for those of us out there who will be recording images in any manner; should probably print out that PDF and do as it suggests: retain a copy and keep it on you at all times. This way you know your rights, and if you're ever questioned by anyone, whether it be a $cientologist or government official, or anyone. You'll know what you can and can't do.

IN THE LIKELY EVENT THAT WE ARE FOLLOWED

Do not return directly to your homes or cars if you feel you're being followed. Instead, take a detour. Stop in for lunch somewhere, go to the mall, see a movie. The bigger the crowd you can be lost in, the better.

Also see:

The law is on OUR side when it comes to being followed.

423. (1) Every one is guilty of an indictable offence and liable to imprisonment for a term of not more than five years or is guilty of an offence punishable on summary conviction who, wrongfully and without lawful authority, for the purpose of compelling another person to abstain from doing anything that he or she has a lawful right to do, or to do anything that he or she has a lawful right to abstain from doing,

(a) uses violence or threats of violence to that person or his or her spouse or common-law partner or children, or injures his or her property;
(b) intimidates or attempts to intimidate that person or a relative of that person by threats that, in Canada or elsewhere, violence or other injury will be done to or punishment inflicted on him or her or a relative of his or hers, or that the property of any of them will be damaged;
(c) persistently follows that person;
(d) hides any tools, clothes or other property owned or used by that person, or deprives him or her of them or hinders him or her in the use of them;
(e) with one or more other persons, follows that person, in a disorderly manner, on a highway;
(f) besets or watches the place where that person resides, works, carries on business or happens to be; or
(g) blocks or obstructs a highway.

Rules of Engagement

There are reports that indicate that the Scienos will be shipping all the low-level members off-site, but will leave behind OTs to oppose the protest. If this is true, resistance might be stiff, and it will become important for all of us to keep our wits about us and remember several key points:

  • Unless you are possessed by the ghost of Socrates, do not engage in an argument with any scieno. You will lose. You cannot convince them that they are wrong. Logic will not work against them.
  • If you are getting harassed by scienos as we've all seen happen in YouTube videos, walk away. Ignore them. Keep handing out flyers while they yell obsenities at you. Like a troll, the best way to treat these guys is to ignore them.
  • Do not under any circumstance touch a scieno with any part of your body. Don't even walk close to them. This should be obvious to everyone, but it is worth repeating. They will purposely run into you and claim assault. Don't fall into their traps!
  • If a scieno makes any type of physical contact with you in any way, back away and tell them not to touch you. If they persist, let the police know right away.
  • If, in the extremely unlikely case that you are attacked physically, do not fight back. This will more than likely not happen, but it is also worth mentioning. Go limp and fall to the ground, or curl up into a ball. Don't think that fighting back is "self defense" and you'll be let off- the police will come after you, and I'd rather go home with a bruise than a criminal record.

Important notes on acceptable behaviour

It cannot be stressed enough how important it is for the success of this operation that all persons attending behave in a respectable and dignified manner.

"Unacceptable behaviour" is any activity that damages our stance in the eyes of the general public - the very people we are trying to reach - and includes any type of illegal behaviour (vandalism, assault, mischief, etc.), or any other type of behaviour that lessens the seriousness of an event that is attempting to draw attention to an organization that has ruined lives.

Watch the following video and ask yourself, "If I'm an ordinary man/woman walking down the street, have never heard of Anonymous, and I only go online to check the value of my stock, would I be attracted to these protesters or be dismissive of them and their message?" Video in question: http://youtube.com/watch?v=eOv6sLoLqeQ

The protest will be a fun day. You'll get to meet lots of people who share some of your values and who read some of the same websites that you do. However, shouting/singing memes, blasting chan music or live-action Rick Rolling people is counter-productive and will, whether you realize it or not, make you (and by association, everyone in the protest) look stupid. Ordinary people don't care about Rick Astley, or to whom all their base belongs to. They will, however, care to learn information about a dangerous organization that has roots in their community.

TL;DR: The protests of have been set up to deliver a serious message. Don't mess this up for everyone by wearing your Weeabo shirt to the protest or pulling a stupid prank to impress your internet friends. Whether or not these protests are remembered as a victory or failure for Anonymous depends on your ability to behave with dignity.

Make sure that any vids you post represent the raid accurately (a note on memes)

It's possible that all of this is not worth bitching about, as long as memes are used judiciously. The above video shows an instance where protesters sang Belair ONCE to lift spirits near the end of a raid. However, the way it's presented, the video makes it look like Belair was the point of the whole raid, when it really represented about 90 seconds of a 4-hour demonstration.

Singing songs to keep energy high is a typical feature of many perfectly dignified protests. We had already handed out hundreds upon hundreds of leaflets for hours in the freezing cold and snow meme-free. We decided to sing a fun song that we were familiar with to add a bit of levity to an uncomfortable and ultimately serious event. Belair was sung when the street was pretty much empty, after the group had decided to call it a day. Hardly any pedestrians saw us singing, and none of them seemed overly dismissive or freaked out by it.

Complaints

We did, however, receive several complaints throughout the protest from pedestrians about our "scary" Guy Fawkes masks. In the grand scheme of things, Belair isn't really an esoteric internet meme - most of the public knows the show - and singing it once didn't damage our image until the video made it seem like that was all we did. In fact, the masks invariably did more damage in the eyes of the public, so if you really don't want to freak them out, find another way to cover your face.

A few people wore hoodies & scarves which looked slightly more friendly. A colourful scarf would be a good idea.

News in Winnipeg/Media coverage

Updated: with working links to two previously broken ones!

This is currently a working list of news articles (mostly) relating to the CoS in Winnipeg:

1. Church expands. Buys historic exchange building in downtown.

"...It also will include spaces for spiritual counselling, classrooms, a community room, conference rooms and a "state-of-the-art event hall which will be available for the community to use freely."|Murray McNeill, Free Press

2. Here's a link to everything the Free Press has ever covered on Scientology.

3. Jeebus Crust! Scientology tries to get Sam Katz behind them.

"Winnipeg's mayor and the city have nothing to do with the publication, 20 copies of which were sent to Katz's office as part of an international effort to get political leaders to promote writings by the late Hubbard.|Bartley Kives, Free Press

4. We should contact this StatGuy.

"Watch out, Winnipegers. The Church of Scientology has announced plans to spend $10 million to convert the historic Peck Building (at right), a landmark in Winnipeg’s Exchange District, into a church and “community outreach centre”."|StatGuy

5. We could possibly (I know I'm reaching) get the Libraries involved. They generally have a long memory.

"The Church of Scientology of Canada has advised some libraries that they may be cited as party defendants in a libel suit...

...But, in an advisory memorandum signed by the association's incoming president, Belly Henderson, association members were told, "... the threat is potential rather than actual." The memo said, "In view of the objectives of the ... association, it may be desirable to retain the books in question on library shelves even though some risk is involved."|Winnipeg Free Press

6. The Secret of Scientology: An Examination Of The Controversial Religious-Psychological-Pseudoscientific cult. This was written by Mike Cowley for the Free Press on February 1st of 1969. 39 years later there's interest again.

"You either swear by it or at it. Writer Mike Cowley joined Toronto's Church of Scientology and found it a super sales job — and it costs..."|Mike Cowley

7. Not specifically about Winnipeg, though there are probably Winnipeg companies in this list. WISE is a group of Scientologist's who are committed to getting Scientology into the mainstream.
